# Write a win-back email to past customers, with a CAN-SPAM check

Give AI your offer and a few facts, and it drafts a short, honest email inviting past customers back, with the unsubscribe and postal address spots marked, so you can reach old customers without sounding pushy or breaking email rules.

- Category: Customers and sales
- Difficulty: Easy
- Setup: about 10 minutes
- Time saved: about 20 minutes a use (our estimate, not a measurement)
- Works with: Any AI chat, Any email marketing tool
- Test status: Run once on made-up data on 21 Oct 2026 with Claude Opus 5.5. One run, not proof.
- Approval: Draft, not yet approved by the owner
- Version: 1
- Last checked: 2026-10-21

## What this does

AI drafts three subject lines and one short email inviting past customers back, from your offer and one or two true updates. You check every claim, fill in the unsubscribe link and postal address, and send it from your own email tool.

## Before you start

- Any AI chat (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot).
- Your offer (with limits and end date) and one or two true updates.
- An email tool that adds an unsubscribe link, or a way to handle opt-outs yourself.
- Setup: about 10 minutes (our estimate).
- Privacy: don't paste your customer list. Your email tool fills in names.

This is not legal advice. The FTC's CAN-SPAM rules cover marketing email, including email to past customers. Check with your lawyer if you're unsure.

## Steps

1. **Pick** who gets it: only past customers who agreed to marketing email from you and have not unsubscribed. An email address from a past job is not permission. This is HourSaved's standard; CAN-SPAM itself doesn't require prior permission for email.
2. **Paste** the prompt and fill in your offer, its limits and the other blanks.
3. **Check** every claim against your notes and delete anything you can't back up. The SBA advises a person review all AI-written outreach.
4. **Fill in** the footer: a real postal address and working unsubscribe link. Make clear it's an ad.
5. **Test** it: send it to yourself and click the unsubscribe link.
6. **Send** it from your email tool. Remove anyone who unsubscribes right away (the FTC allows up to 10 business days).

## The prompt

```
Help me write a win-back email to past customers of my business. Use only the facts I give you. Do not invent reviews, statistics, deadlines or claims like "customers love". Do not send anything.
Business: [name and what you do]
Who gets it: past customers last served [when]
Offer (use exactly, with limits): [offer and end date]
True updates I can mention: [1-2 facts]
How to book: [reply, phone, or link]
Please write:
1. Three honest subject lines. No fake urgency, no "Re:" or "Fwd:", nothing the email doesn't deliver.
2. One email under 150 words, warm and plain, with [FIRST NAME] as a blank.
3. A footer with [POSTAL ADDRESS] and [UNSUBSCRIBE LINK] as blanks, and a line saying it's an advertisement.
4. A FLAGS list: anything unclear about the offer, and anything I must check before sending.
```

## Try it with made-up data

Greenway Lawn Care (fictional), mowing and yard care. Who: past customers last served in the 2029 season. Offer: 15% off your first mow when you book by April 30, 2030. True update: we added Saturday appointments this year. How to book: reply to this email or call [phone].

## What the AI gave us

> **Subject lines:** "15% off your first mow, when you book by April 30" / "Greenway is booking spring lawn care" / "A spring offer from Greenway Lawn Care"
>
> Hi [FIRST NAME],
>
> It's been a while since we last took care of your lawn, and we'd be glad to help again this spring.
>
> Book your first mow by April 30, 2030, and you'll get 15% off that visit. We've also added Saturday appointments this year, if weekdays are hard for you.
>
> To book, just reply to this email or call [PHONE].
>
> Thanks,
> [YOUR NAME], Greenway Lawn Care
>
> *This is an advertisement from Greenway Lawn Care. [POSTAL ADDRESS]. Don't want these emails? [UNSUBSCRIBE LINK]*
>
> **FLAGS:** Does 15% apply to mowing only, or to other services on the same visit? Confirm the list has only past customers who haven't unsubscribed. [POSTAL ADDRESS] and [UNSUBSCRIBE LINK] must be real before sending.

It kept the offer exact and did not invent praise or urgency. A person still had to answer the offer question and fill in the name, phone and footer.

## Check before you send

- [ ] The offer, limits and end date match what you'll honor.
- [ ] No made-up claims, like "customers love".
- [ ] The subject line matches the email.
- [ ] Everyone on the list agreed to marketing email, and the footer has a real postal address and working unsubscribe link.
- [ ] It's clearly an ad, and the "From" name shows your business.

## Don't paste

- Your customer list, emails or phone numbers.
- Personal reasons a customer left (illness, money trouble, a dispute), or anything told in confidence.
- Payment or card details.

## When not to use this

- People who never agreed to marketing email from you, or who unsubscribed.
- Customers who left after a dispute. Call them, or leave them be.
- Text messages. Texts have their own consent rules. Get each person's permission first.
- If you can't honor opt-outs quickly.

## Questions owners ask

**Do CAN-SPAM rules apply to my own past customers?**
Yes, if the main purpose is selling. The FTC says marketing email to former customers is covered. A receipt or an update on a booked job is treated differently.

**Do I have to include an unsubscribe link?**
You need a clear way to opt out: a return email address or another easy online way, such as a link. Most email tools add one. Leaving out any opt-out breaks the rule; the FTC lists penalties of up to $53,088 per email.
